Taking Advantage of the Rec Center

As a college student at the University of Arizona we have access to the Rec Center 7 days a week. The Rec center offers every type of equipment for every body type. Along with that the Rec also offers many perks that most students aren’t aware of or take advantage of.

-The rock climbing wall is known by many as a fun pass time but it actually serves as a great arm workout! Whether you are finishing up a workout or passing by the Rec with some friends head outside and check it out.

-Walking through the gym is a struggle for many but luckily the Rec Center offers numerous classes that are run by students. These classes range from HIIT, Yoga, Ab’s Butt and Legs and Cardio. There are classes for anyone who wants to jump start a healthy lifestyle.

-Another great feature at the Rec that many people do not know about is the gym pairing system. If you are looking for a buddy to workout with you can sign up at the front desk and choose your desired workout such as arms, legs or cardio. From there the Rec will pair you with another student that has the same desired workout.

The 5 Do’s and Don’ts of Meal Prep

For this weeks blog post I have decided to take on the concept of meal prepping. Over the past few weeks I have been looking to social media for new ideas that will motivate me to lead a healthier lifestyle and one that many life style coaches seem to promote is mea prep. For those that do not know meal prepping is a quick and simple way to guarantee that you have real and healthy food ready to eat throughout the week. If you are looking to meal prep in the future I am going to share with you the do’s and don’ts of meal prepping that I have determined from trial and error.

  1. Label, Store and Freeze
    • Before you begin to meal prep make sure you have the right tools. To do that you might want to go to your local container store to purchase plastic or glass resealable containers. A few other tips would be to label your containers and cool them before putting them in to the fridge.
  2. Stay Focused
    • If you are meal prepping alone a fun way to stay focused and motivated is to put on your favorite album and prep while it plays. Another option if you have a laptop or TV near by is to put on your favorite show!
  3. Make it a Weekly Event
    • Meal prepping does not have to be done alone. Meal prepping with family members or a group of friends can be a fun activity. Each friend can be given a different task to make the process go faster!
  4. It Doesn’t Take as Long as you Think
    • When people hear “meal prep” they associate it with taking up a lot of time. To make the process go faster you can use the 30/30 app that I reviewed in a previous post to set goals in an organized manner. The more you meal prep the better you will get at it!
  5. Choose your Recipes in Advance
    • Before you begin meal prepping search the Internet for easy recipes that sound good for you to enjoy during the week. By panning in advance you can make a list of ingredients to guarantee that you do not forget any items when you are at the market.

Apps to Keep you on Track

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is hard to do but thanks to the smartphone there are millions of apps that you can download to help you out. Searching through the App Store for the best healthy lifestyle apps can be difficult so below I have ranked my personal favorites. Apps have the ability to keep us motivated and on track which is something everyone should take advantage of.

The first app that is extremely useful when trying to organize your day is

30/30

This app allows you to organize your time into 30 minute intervals in an organized manner. If you work from home or are spending the day at the library you can schedule your homework and breaks ahead of time. Personally I get very distracted and when I plan my day through this app I find myself to get more done in a more timely manner. Not only is the app very useful but it is very easy to navigate. The app is color coated and has large icons making it useful for individuals of all ages.

Headspace:Guided Meditation and Mindfulness

Growing up during the digital age I have noticed that my peers and I are constantly reaching for our phones which is really distracting when trying to get homework done. The App Headspace was created to get people to put down their phones. The app creates a designated time for clarity and meditation. I tried the app out while I was writing a long paper and found it to be very useful. I heard about it from a friend who teaches yoga. By meditating for just a quick 10 minutes I was able to re-energize myself and continue on with my paper. Prior to this I was not very fond of meditation but this app changed my views!

Sleep Bop

Being in college my sleep schedule is all over the place. Through the sleep bop app you are able to track your sleep cycle along with a programed smart alarm to guarantee that you receive the correct amount of sleep. The smart alarm is the most beneficial aspect of this App because you are sure not to over sleep or under sleep. Sleep is one of the most important factors to focus on when you are trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A good night sleep allows you to have a more successful and energized day. After one night of using the app I was able to see how a good night of sleep was able to positively effect my day.

 

How Social Media Can Help you

To look for recipes once again I turn to social media. Social media has allowed its users to break into so many new realms. Through Instagram, Twitter and Facebook users are able to learn so much and at the same time read about other individuals experiences. When I am looking for something new to make or just looking for some encouragement to continue leading a healthy life I pull up some of my favorite accounts. On there I can find other individuals and relate to them. Although these people are strangers we share a common goal, which connects us. Finding people online that share similar interests allows you to expose yourself to new things. When focusing on recipes you can read the comments and see the outcomes of others or even share your own. Posting on social media about something you are interesting in is a healthy and fun way to pass time. It is exciting to cook new meals and share the photos through social media. By doing that you can inspire other to strive to be healthier. I hope my blog inspires you to not only lead a healthier life but to explore social media and expose yourself to new ideas!

Essential Kitchen Tools

I am usually not one to explore kitchen tools but these two are necessary when cooking healthy at home dinners.

The first tool is a spiralizer, a spiralizer can be found in a hand held version or a countertop version. This tool can be used for various vegetables such as zucchini, apples, butternut squash and beets just to name a few. The tool is used to turn basically any vegetable into the form of noodles, like spaghetti, but healthier.
